Physical Sketch Models

For our current Columbia River Gorge House project we started with an on-site visit. Walking the landscape and talking about possible programmatics informed a series of quick cardboard sketch models we made to capture the feel of the site and an initial gesture of building a new home into the earth’s topography, the gorges tree lines and the solar path of the sun. One powerful realization that occurred to us walking the site was feeling the Gorges massive water shed moving down to the Columbia River. Out of this realization we started by “lifting the water shed up” to become the roof, which will act as a localized collector for onsite water storage.
