Facing eastward in the San Juan Island archipelago, the Lummi Island projects each find repose on the side of a mountain. At the stone house site, a rocky tor evolved into the core of the structure-a stone turret with six fireplaces. The solution to a tall, boxy pole structure addition was to anchor it with a low, open, slab-on-grade annex. Although its footprint was predetermined by access easements, septic and zoning setbacks, and steep slopes, the green roof house utilized a swath of southern sky cleared by the street to capture precious light in a dark location. In similar fashion, the 1000 SF house maximizes a small buildable site while adhering to a constrained budget.
