Performance Works Northwest - PWNW

Mixed Use Performance, Flexible Studio and Artist-In-Residence Facility: Portland, OR - 4,500 SF

Located on a through-lot, the new PWNW facility is an open, "industrial-type" space for making and presenting contemporary performance works. The expansion will provide 4,500 SF of performance space, multi-use studio, and an artist's residence. The project will be a cost efficient, accessible and adaptable facility responsive to the advancement and development of contemporary performance works, artists and audiences. The new facility reflects the Foster neighborhood's historic mix of commercial, industrial and residential uses. The performance entrance at the building's east side, with its deep awning and arched false-front recalls a western "stage-like" streetscape. At night, the façade transforms, through vibrant illumination, from industrial storefront to theatrical backdrop signaling the performance within.  The shape of the façade invites gathering by creating a semi-covered exterior place with a smooth log bench and new street trees.

The entrance at the building's west side reflects the residential scale and material palette of the neighborhood.  Recessed entrances for the ground floor flexible studio and second floor artist residence are set back from the street and are organized around a rain garden utilizing roof water runoff.
Inside, the building's ground floor is separated into three parts: a large performance space (1,950SF); a utility core (800SF) containing restrooms, storage and office functions; and a flexible studio/ green room (775SF) including restroom, shower and kitchenette. Above the studio is an artist's residence (740SF) with exterior deck, garden access, guest room and loft. Carbon footprint reducing features of the project are:

- A Rain Garden to manage roof and pavement storm water runoff.
- South sloping roof orientation for future solar panel installation.
- South facing operable skylights for solar gain and light source with heat control interior baffles.
- Efficient heating/cooling system using potential ground source heat exchanger with a floor/ wall distribution system.
- On-demand tank-less water heating, dual flush toilets and energy star appliances.
- Low VOC Finishes
- Recycling of existing building lumber.
- Upgraded floor, wall and ceiling thermal insulation.
- High performance fluorescent fixtures with one or two bulb modes for general house lighting and studio practice sessions.
